Ogunlana Adesina Ademola

Leading Bar Activist

Born in 1964, Ogunlana Adesina Ademola completed his secondary school education at Ilora Baptist Grammar School , Ilora, near Oyo, Oyo State before proceeding to read English at University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife in present day Osun State between 1981 and 1985, graduating at the young age of 21 .

He was admitted to read law at Lagos State University, Ojoo, Lagos State in 1989 . He became actively involved in the Students’ Union of the Lagos State University . He was elected as the Legal Secretary of the Students’ Union for the parliamentary period between 1992 and 1994. He played a leading role in the anti-military and pro-students’ protests spearheaded by the Students’ Union and was purportedly expelled by the Lagos State University management . After challenging the purported expulsion in court in the matter of ADESINA OGUNLANA & ORS v LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY , he was reinstated . He thereafter proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1996.

Upon his call to the Nigerian Bar, he had his pupillage in the law firm of Lawal Pedro and Associates under his Principal, Mr. Lawal Pedro, now a Senior Advocate, who also rose to become the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Ministry of Justice before his retirement from Civil Service.

He started his law firm, Winners’ Don’t Quit Chambers in year 2000. Over the years, over 30 lawyers have undertaken pupillage under him. All his former pupils can attest to his humane and considerate working conditions and prioritisation of practice of law as a business.

He commenced the publication of SQUIB Magazine in year 2001, an anti-corruption magazine fighting the hydra-headed monster both on the Bench and in the Bar.

He is a Barman to the core , who has devoted much of his practice years to the service of the Bar. He was appointed Welfare Secretary of Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association , by virtue of which he is also a member of the National Executive Committee member between 2008 and 2010. He served as General Secretary of the Ikeja Branch and NEC Member between 2010 and 2012 . He served as Vice-Chairman of the Branch between 2014 and 2016 . He is the immediate past Chairman of the Branch between 2016 and 2018.

At the National level, he has also served the Bar meritoriously. He was Assistant Secretary of the Local Organising Committee of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2009 . He was also the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee of the Annual General Conference held in 2017 at Lagos. He was appointed by the current President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Paul Usoro SAN as NEC Co-opted Member of the Nigerian Bar Association from 2018 till date.

He has published works to his credit. In year 2000, four years after his call, he published
” Understanding the Secrets of Successful Lawyers” .

He published “F.R.A. Williams: The Life and Times of Nigeria’s Greatest Lawyer” in 2005 . In 2010, he published ” Why Lawyers are Angels But Other People Say No” . In 2014, he published “G.O.K. Ajayi : The Life and Times of Nigeria’s Sweetest Lawyer” .

Under his Chairmanship of the Nigerian Bar Association, premised on his Manifesto that “he has come in order for lawyers to practice and practice more abundantly”, he caused to be published a publication ” THIS TEMPLE MUST NOT FALL” , which is an x-ray of the state of the Judiciary in Lagos State.

Mr. Ogunlana is an out and out radical activist. Under his Chairmanship of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, he led a struggle against Police Brutality, which have become the scourge facing lawyers and rose in defence of Fatai Abijo Esq., a member of the Branch who was beaten by police officers. The struggle led to the police officer , involved in the misconduct , prostrating and begging for mercy at the Bar Centre of the Branch. The then Commissioner of Police was also forced to address a Joint Press Conference with the NBA Ikeja Branch leadership at the Bar Centre of the Branch.

The apex of the struggles led by the Branch under his Chairmanship was the struggle against the toxic Land Use Charge imposed by former Governor Akinwumi Ambode . Full blown protests on 13th, 22nd and 29th March, 2018 led to the defeat of the Land Use Charge .

Above all, his main thrust is welfare of lawyers. Under his Chairmanship of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Branch ran Quarterly Medical Welfare Programme including but not limited to eye tests, blood pressure tests, cervical cancer tests for women, HIV tests, sugar level tests, hypertension tests , involving up to 20
Doctors, nurses and other health professionals .

In 2019, as Chairman of the Citizens Rally against Oppression, he was the lone voice that took out a legal action against the Chief Judge of Lagos State over the obnoxious provisions of the High Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules 2019 which imposed arbitrary costs on counsel for absence at trial, no matter the grounds for same.
